17 MILE DRIVE BIKE RENTAL FREE

A left turn onto Soledad led to Del Monte Mall. To get back to Monterey where we rented the bikes, we crossed over Hwy 1 and took a short paved bike path along Hwy 1/68 that ended and put us on Viejo Road. After the Lone Cypress Tree, there is a lot more climbing on the route towards Pebble Beach and then a long climb towards the junction with Hwy 1 and Hwy 68.

The southwest section of 17 Mile Drive has some hills to climb with no shoulder so it is probably best for more experienced road cyclists although we did see an Adventures By the Sea tour group (2 guides and 8 cyclists) stopping at the same places we did. We were riding late morning so probably fewer cars earlier in the morning and possibly more cyclists. It seemed that most of the traffic was headed in the same direction as we were which made cars passing cyclists easier but there were occasionally cars and bikes going the other way too. We were going pretty slow on our mountain bike rentals but we saw many roadies whizz by and it was evident that 17 Mile Drive was a popular training spot for cyclists. After that, cars and bikes were sharing the road but motorists were driving slow and very courteous and patient around us cyclists. For a few miles there was a nice sized shoulder/bike lane until past Seal Rock.

There was a separate path for bikes to enter bypassing the gate where cars had to pay to get in. We rented bikes from Monterey Cannery Row area, rode along the coastline and entered 17 Mile Drive from Sunset Drive on the Asilomar side.
